What does cyberpunks mean?

The original cypherpunks were a group of digital pioneers in the 1980s who spoke for the need to defend privacy and security through the use of cryptographic methods to enact political and social change.

The original group began in San Francisco, but later evolved to the Cypherpunks mailing list, which eventually grew to more than 2,000 members who had discussions ranging from technical discussion over mathematics, cryptography, computer science, political and philosophical discussion, personal arguments and attacks, etc.

The Cypherpunks were among the first to speak of the need for a digital currency.
