What does HODL mean?

The internal joke between cryptocurrency traders that was born not so long ago as a typo of “Hold”. When you read “HODL BITCOIN!” it means “Hold onto your Bitcoin the price is going up”.

The initial mistake was made in a Bitcointalk forum thread in 2013 by a drunk Bitcoin trader during a drop in the price of Bitcoin. Later it was implied that HODL also stood for “Hold On for Dear Life”, but this is simply made up and has nothing to do with the origin of the term, which was nothing more than an amusing mistake initially that turned out to be a viral and later defining term for Bitcoin enthusiasts.
